The Awesome Year 5s

The last 2 weeks have flown by quickly.

We have been having a look at these areas in our learning:

  • Myths, Legends and Fables.
We have enjoyed reading Legends and Fables.  We also tried our hand at writing some of our own Legends and Fables.  In week 3 we will be reading and writing Myths.

We have also been making our sentences more interesting by adding adjectives, verbs and adverbs. We have all been working on making compound sentences!

In Reading, we are looking at making inferences - this means we are using clues the author has given us - these clues help us find out more about characters and settings.  It's also called reading between the lines.

The class enjoyed this activity on BBC:

  • Measurement
In Measurement, we have been looking at measuring using millimetres, centimetres and metres. We have weighed items and calculated the mass of water in a jug. We found time a little bit difficult (e.g. 24 hour time and counting how many hours it takes to do something.  Next week we will be starting perimeter and area.

  • How groups make and implement laws (Topic)
Year 5 is studying "How groups make and implement laws". This is a really interesting area and the children are starting to debate 'laws' (how old should we be to start school, how old should we be to get a drivers licence).

  • Science - Light.
We have only had a little look at light so far.  We did look at the meanings of 'opaque', 'transparent', and 'translucent' and how the eye sees.
