A couple of weeks ago, we did a test of accuracy - moving 1 litre of water from one tub to another.
Before we started, we discussed how we would move the water safely. We could only use a small cup to transfer the water a little bit at a time.
One member from each team measured out 1 litre of water, and brought it to the starting tub as safely as possible.
Once the water was ready to go, they started. Taking turns, whilst their peers shouted words of positive encouragement, they started the task of moving the water.
Some learnt quickly that if you ran with the water, it probably wouldn't end up in the tub. Others realised that if they tipped the water in from a great height, most of the water would miss the tub.
One team ended up with 900 ml, which was the best result!
This was a good reminder that patience is a virtue!
We created a mini crime-scene at school the other day.
It was very interesting seeing the shadows move throughout the day, and we drew chalk outlines again to see how much the shadows moved and also if they changed size!
We discussed why shadows move and why shadows change size.
Shadows move and change due to Earth's rotation. The angle of the Sun, low in the sky to higher in the sky, changes the length of the shadow cast behind an object. In the morning, the Sun appears low in the sky; objects cast long shadows

In English, we have been writing myths. We have talked about ancient Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses, and have looked at some Greek myths to help us figure out how to actually write one.
After some great discussions, we realised that myths are explaining events. They used Gods/Goddesses and heroes to help them explain, well, unexplainable events in the ancient times. Like, why does it rain? Why do people feel emotions?
We had a watch of this fairly creepy, yet entertaining, myth:
The language to describe and explain things is amazing. The students all quickly jotted down ideas that they could use to influence their myths.
There has been a variety of wonderful myths, but I decided to share with you one myth that I enjoyed reading when I was checking homework today!
Why it Rains

Every now and then, Hades realises how happy people are on Earth. Hades gets very jealous and sends some of his souls to cover the sun like a veil, so the people are no so happy. But before they get there, the Gods notice the souls. Apollo, since he is the sun God, flies up as quick as lightning to defend the sun. Apollo always wins and Hades is angry at the souls who failed him. And as a punishment, Hades does not let the souls return to the underworld. The clouds are actually the defeated souls…since they have nothing else to do. Sometimes, the defeated souls cry because they cannot return to the underworld; so the rain is actually the souls crying.
This week saw our very first basketball champions session with Coach C.
Since last week's session was cancelled at the last minute, the students in Kekeno were very excited about having a basketball session.
We started off talking about values, like respect and teamwork, and how they are important in everyday life (and in sports too!).
After talking, we ran down to the gym and started playing some basketball skill games. We played Octopus, Golden Child, and a couple of other games. It was a lot of fun!
We were expecting Michael Jordan to turn up, but he was too busy.
Although Grandparent's Day was a few weeks ago, I have decided to do a photo post on here, showing what we did.
It was so interesting hearing all of the stories about our grandparent's days at school. How it has changed! We are so lucky to not get the cane anymore.
First up, we had our whole school singing performance. We blew the grandparents away with our beautiful singing.
Afterwards, we went back to class and filled out a questionnaire about our grandparents.
Our grandparents talked about school and Liam's grandad even brought in an artillery shell!
Finally, we made some paper flyers using straws and paper.
This week we have started to have a look at play-scripts.
We have had a read of 'The Happy Prince' by Oscar Wilde and looked at the different characters.

Today we started writing a section of the story as a play.
Each group worked really well together and shared their ideas on how to write the section of the story as a play.
First of all, they had to make a key and highlight, in the story, who was speaking.
Next week they will start writing their own plays to perform to the class!
In Science, we have been learning about evaporation and condensation. As part of this topic, we made crystals.
We used salt and hot water.
The experiment started a few weeks ago, and we have been tracking the crystals growth in Science. It is very exciting seeing how much they have grown. Some of them have grown a lot and others not so much.
We have decided it depends on how much salt we put in the cups.
This blog update is a little late but better late than never!
Camp this term was spectacular. Miss H went on camp for the first time (as a teacher), and some of the year 5s had never been on camp before.
Here are a few highlights:
1) Air Rifle shooting
2) Rock climbing
3) Mountain Boarding
4) Kayaking, safe boating and coastering
5) Bush cooking
6) Orienteering
7) And our give back!
There were so many fun activities, and the leaders did an amazing job with showing us what to do.
Every night was wrapped up with a delicious cup of hot chocolate. Thank you to Ethan's dad and Ananda's dad for helping make the hot chocolate every night.
On Thursday 16th March, the whole school went to Ti Point Reptile Park. It was a long journey by bus, but it was worth it!
The owner, Ivan, showed us a couple of different reptiles. There was a Bearded Dragon, a Tuatara and a turtle.
After seeing the lizards, we went to the alligator enclosures. We were introduced to the female and male alligators. The keeper had a lot of knowledge and told us heaps of new information about the alligators.
Their jaws are very, very strong!
After seeing the alligators we went to see the one monkey in the reptile park. Her name is Harrison. She has been at the zoo for about 34 years!
We then went on to look for more lizards.
Our last stop was looking at 2 babies:
A bearded dragon baby and a turtle baby. They were both tiny and incredibly cute!
The Reptile Park was a fantastic place to go to! It was very interesting and we learnt a lot about reptiles!
